This summer, the U.S. Congress must act upon the
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability
Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and decide whether patients'
medical records will be kept private, or be made
readily available to a plethora of health care professionals
and government organizations.
If Congress doesn't act by August 21, 1999
(the deadline established by HIPAA), then the Department
of Health and Human Services (HHS) will establish
regulations governing your medical records within
six months of the deadline.

The deadline is approaching. If Congress does not
pass a medical privacy law by August 21, 1999, then
the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS)
is required to establish regulations governing your
medical privacy.
